Scripture for the season

Four passages to carry through Advent

Advent looks back to the promises of the prophets and forward to Christmas. These passages are quoted from the King James Version.

Isaiah's promise of a child who would be called the Prince of Peace:

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)

The prophet Micah names the small town where the promised ruler would come from:

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.Micah 5:2 (KJV)

The angel Gabriel's words to Mary:

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.Luke 1:31 (KJV)

The angel's news to the shepherds on the night Jesus was born:

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.Luke 2:10-11 (KJV)

A simple practice

A daily Advent rhythm in five minutes

  1. On Sunday, light the week's candle and say the week's word out loud: hope, peace, joy or love.
  2. Each day, read one short passage. The four above are a good place to start; read one slowly, twice.
  3. Breathe with one line of it. Let a single phrase stay with you, like “Fear not” or “The Prince of Peace”.
  4. Pray one honest sentence about what you are waiting for this year, and carry it into the day.
