The short answer

Philippians 4:6-7 and 1 Peter 5:7 are the verses Christians most often turn to for anxiety: they invite you to bring every worry to God in prayer and promise His peace. Below are 12 verses from the King James Version, grouped by theme, each with a line of context. If anxiety is overwhelming you, please also talk to a doctor or counselor.

What does the Bible say about anxiety?

The Bible never pretends that worry and fear aren't real. The psalms are full of people who are troubled, sleepless and afraid, and Jesus himself prayed in deep anguish in the garden of Gethsemane. What Scripture offers is not a command to feel nothing, but an invitation: bring what you're carrying to God, again and again, and let Him carry it with you.

The verses below are quoted word for word from the King James Version. The KJV is over 400 years old, so a few words have shifted in meaning; where that matters, the note underneath explains it.

Bible verses for when you're worried

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

In the KJV, “careful” means full of care, or anxious. Paul wrote this letter while imprisoned, yet he tells the believers in Philippi to turn every worry into a prayer, with thanksgiving, and promises a peace that guards the heart.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)

Peter was writing to Christians under real pressure. The reason he gives for handing over our cares is simple and personal: God cares for you.

Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.Psalm 55:22 (KJV)

A psalm of David written in a time of betrayal. The picture is of handing a heavy load to someone stronger, who then holds you up.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.Matthew 6:34 (KJV)

“Take therefore no thought” here means don't be anxious. Jesus isn't telling us not to plan; he is freeing us from carrying tomorrow's weight today.

Bible verses for peace of mind

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.John 14:27 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words to his disciples the night before his death. The peace he gives doesn't depend on circumstances going well.

In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.Psalm 94:19 (KJV)

“The multitude of my thoughts” describes a racing, crowded mind. Even there, the psalmist finds that God's comfort can bring delight.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)

Perfect peace is linked to where the mind rests. This is a good verse to memorize and repeat slowly when your thoughts begin to spiral.

Bible verses for when you're afraid

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)

God speaks through the prophet Isaiah to a people who felt small and threatened. Notice how many promises are stacked in one verse: I am with you, I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you.

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.Psalm 56:3 (KJV)

One of the shortest and most honest prayers in the Bible. David doesn't claim he is never afraid; he decides what to do when he is.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)

Paul wrote this to Timothy, a younger leader who seems to have struggled with timidity. “A sound mind” can also be understood as self-control or clear thinking.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.Psalm 46:1 (KJV)

“A very present help” means help that is near and available right now, not someday.

A Bible verse for when you're exhausted

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV)

Jesus' invitation is to people who are worn out. A yoke was a wooden frame that let two animals share a load; Jesus offers to share yours, and calls himself gentle and humble in heart.

How can I use these verses when anxiety hits?

  • Pick one verse, not twelve. Choose the one that speaks to you most and stay with it for a week.
  • Breathe with it. Read it slowly, breathe in on the first half and out on the second.
  • Pray it back. Turn it into your own words: “God, I'm handing you this worry about tomorrow.”
  • Keep it where you'll see it. Write it on a card by your bed, or set it as your phone's lock screen.
  • Name the worry. Philippians 4:6 talks about letting your requests be made known. Say the specific thing out loud, or write it down.

When should I get help for anxiety?

Faith and professional care work together; needing a doctor or counselor is not a sign of weak faith. If anxiety is stopping you from sleeping, working or enjoying life, or if it lasts for weeks, please talk to your doctor or a licensed counselor, and let a pastor or trusted friend know what you're going through.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Bible verse for anxiety?

Philippians 4:6-7 is the verse most often recommended: it invites you to bring everything to God in prayer with thanksgiving and promises the peace of God that passes all understanding. 1 Peter 5:7 is a shorter one to memorize: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

What does “be careful for nothing” mean in Philippians 4:6?

In the King James Version, “careful” means full of care or anxious. Modern readers would say “don't be anxious about anything,” and the verse goes on to say what to do instead: pray about everything, with thanksgiving.

Is it a sin to feel anxious?

Feeling anxious is part of being human, not a sign that your faith has failed. The psalms are full of troubled prayers, and Jesus himself prayed in anguish in Gethsemane. Scripture's response is an invitation to bring that anxiety to God, not shame for feeling it.

Can prayer replace therapy or medication for anxiety?

No. Prayer and Scripture can bring real comfort, and they work alongside professional care, not instead of it. If anxiety is affecting your daily life, talk to a doctor or licensed counselor. In the US you can call or text 988 at any time if you are in crisis.

How do I memorize a Bible verse for anxiety?

Choose one short verse, write it on a card, and read it aloud morning and night for a week. Breathing slowly while you repeat it helps, and praying it back in your own words helps it stick.
