The short answer

Psalm 4:8 is the classic bedtime verse: it says you can lie down in peace and sleep because the LORD keeps you safe. Below are 9 verses from the King James Version for rest and the night hours, each with context, and a short bedtime prayer pattern you can pray in two minutes.

What does the Bible say about sleep?

The Bible treats sleep as a gift and an act of trust. To lie down and close your eyes is to admit that you can't keep the world running by yourself, and that you don't have to. Several psalms were written for the evening, and others come from people who had every reason to lie awake and still found rest in God.

The verses below are quoted word for word from the King James Version, grouped by what you might need at the end of the day.

Why do worries feel louder at night?

During the day, work, conversations and noise keep many worries at the edge of your attention. When the lights go out, those distractions disappear, and the conversation you dreaded, the bill you haven't paid or the person you're worried about can suddenly fill the room. Tiredness also makes problems look bigger than they will in the morning.

You are not the first person to lie awake like this. The psalmists wrote about tears at night, racing thoughts and long hours before dawn. What they model is not pretending the worry isn't there, but turning it toward God. That is what the verses below are for: not a technique to force sleep, but words to rest your mind on while you wait for it.

Bible verses for lying down in peace

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.Psalm 4:8 (KJV)

Psalm 4 is often called an evening psalm. Its last line is a prayer you can say as you turn off the light: safety comes from God, not from having everything settled.

I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.Psalm 3:5 (KJV)

According to its title, David wrote Psalm 3 while fleeing from his own son Absalom. In real danger, he lay down, slept and woke up again, and he credits God for holding him up through the night.

When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.Proverbs 3:24 (KJV)

Part of a father's teaching about walking in wisdom and trust. The promise is that a life entrusted to God can lie down without fear.

Bible verses for when you can't switch off

It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.Psalm 127:2 (KJV)

A psalm about trusting God with your work. Staying up late to worry, or getting up early to get ahead, cannot add what God gives freely; “the bread of sorrows” means bread earned through anxious toil.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)

When your thoughts won't stop, this verse gives them somewhere to rest. Repeat it slowly, one phrase per breath.

When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.Psalm 63:6 (KJV)

David wrote this psalm in the wilderness of Judah. If you lie awake, the night watches don't have to be wasted; they can become a time to remember God instead of rehearsing your worries.

Bible verses about God watching over you at night

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.Psalm 121:3-4 (KJV)

A song pilgrims sang on the way to Jerusalem. You can sleep because the One who keeps you never does.

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.Psalm 91:1 (KJV)

“The secret place” and “the shadow of the Almighty” are pictures of shelter and closeness, like resting in the shade on a hot day.

An invitation to rest

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28 (KJV)

Jesus' invitation isn't only for the end of a long day, but it fits it well. Whatever you're carrying to bed tonight, you're invited to bring it to him.

What is a simple prayer before bed?

When you're tired, a simple pattern helps. Try these four steps, a few sentences each:

  1. Thank. Name one or two good things from today, however small.
  2. Release. Name the worries you're holding and hand them over one by one.
  3. Forgive. Ask forgiveness for where you fell short, and let go of what others did to you.
  4. Rest. Pray one of the verses above slowly, and stop there.

Here is a suggested bedtime prayer in our own words (it is not a quotation from Scripture):

Lord, thank you for today, for the good I noticed and the good I missed. I give you the things I can't fix tonight: my plans, my worries and the people I love. Forgive me where I fell short, and help me forgive others. Watch over this house while I sleep, and give me rest. I trust you with tomorrow. Amen.A suggested prayer, not Scripture

What can I do when I can't sleep?

  • Keep a verse by your bed. Write one on a card so you can read it without picking up your phone.
  • Pray instead of scrolling. If you wake in the night, try a breath prayer: breathe in on the first half of a verse and out on the second.
  • Write the worry down. Putting tomorrow's to-do list on paper can help your mind let go of it until morning.
  • Talk to someone if it keeps happening. If sleeplessness goes on for weeks, or worry is keeping you awake most nights, please talk to your doctor.
